Nurses are literally life savers and there is a short supply of them in many places, which causes the to overwork and tired themselves out. Which why a nursing robot developed by Riken and Sumitomo Riko Company invented Robear. Robear is invented to help lift patients out of beds and into wheelchairs. As well as assist them when walking or when recovering from a surgery. The robot weighs about 140kg and is shaped like a cuddly bear. "We really hope that this robot will lead to advances in nursing care, relieving the burden of caregivers today," said Toshiharu Mukai, leader of the project's robot sensor systems research team. As Mukai said this is the first step of making sure that patients get full satisfactory care without having nurses tiring themselves out. "We intend to continue with research toward more practical robots capable of providing powerful yet gentle care of elderly people," Toshiharu explains. This is Japans effort to start in new chapter in the field of medicine and until then Japan remains the hub of research for the nurse humanoids.
Robots in Medicine are more known to fix life threatening problems, but some problems can be related to mental health. The fact is that there are millions of elderly or mentally disabled people in the world who suffer from crucial loneliness or lack of confidence to communicate, due to loss of companionship. "These patients also tend to be people who require regular check-ups from caretakers, which can be a problem in areas where there are shortages of professional caretakers." - Interesting Engineering Companion robot solve all of these problems and make a significant difference.
Some of these companion robots are:
Pepper! Made for children who suffer mental health disorders. Pepper dances, make hilarious jokes and also makes eye contact. Furthermore, its able to recognize significant emotions of a human and responds to questions and moods. It was created at Viva-tech 2018 and in 2016 it was introduced to two Belgian hospitals as receptionists. No surprise it completed that role spectacularly.
Sam! An automated mobile disinfecting platform Luvozo has been developing new ideas to make the life of elderly and people with disabilities easier. Sam provides non - medical care for seniors in long term care comes homes and frequent check ups. "It reduces the costs of care, while raises patient satisfaction index by merely being there for the elderly all the time." - The Medical Futurist
Buddy! The French robot Buddy is a robotic system that protects your home, is your personal assistant that reminds you of day to day tasks and gives you a hand in the kitchen, as well as is a playmate for children. In addition, it expresses emotion. It can be grumpy, happy and sad.
Professor Einstein! Professor Einstein created by Hanson Robotics can tell you scientific facts, smile and if you connect to your phone it can play brain games, talk to you and even tell you its opinions about famous celebrities.
Cognitoys! New York-based Elemental Path develops Congnitoys are dinosaur shaped toys who talk to kids, teach them how to count, tell them stories and sing/play games.
Miko! Miko is similar Cognitoys. Miko is India's first step to robotic revolution. Miko entertains, educates, plays and talks to children. It is a companion for children over 5. The only huge flaw in Miko is it only runs for 3 hours and then has to be recharged and sometimes less than 3 hours depending on how much the child plays with Miko.
The PARO Therapeutic Robot! As we all know animals help reduce stress and calm our inner selves, but real animals aren't always reliable. Which is why the PARO the Therapeutic robot was created by Dr. Takanori Shibata of the Intelligent System Research Institute of Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). The PARO is created to help cure depression or at least lead to a growth mindset for others like many other companionship bots. The Paro was also created by Dr. Takanori so others can experience more comfort when recovering from a surgery. "The PARO Therapeutic robot is an interactive device that looks like a baby harbor seal and is designed to provide the benefits of animal therapy without relying on live animals." - Online Engineering
Jibo! Jibo answers questions, connects to the houses alarm system and cracks a joke once in a while. Jibo also recognizes faces and talks to people. Furthermore, Jibo comes with incredible features such as snapping family photos, act like a digital concierge, reads a bedtime story to the children, and reminds the elderly to take their medication and many more.
